Terms of use

Applies to: My First Piano by David & Jane Free and Pro for Windows, and this website.
Last updated: October 19, 2026

Plain words about using the app. By installing or using it you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

Who we are

“We” means David & Jane, the publisher of My First Piano (the “app”). You can reach us at support@davidandjane.com or through the contact form. The companion book, My First Music Book, is sold by other stores under their own terms.

Using the app

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to install and use the app on your own devices, as the Microsoft Store allows, for learning and enjoying music. Please do not copy the app to sell or share it, remove its notices, or take it apart, except where the law (or an open-source license, see below) says you may.

Purchases, updates and refunds

The app is sold and delivered by the Microsoft Store. Payments, receipts, updates, refunds and your Microsoft account are handled by Microsoft under its own terms and privacy statement. We may change the price, the features of an edition, or stop selling an edition, and we will keep earlier purchases working for as long as the Store lets us.

Your songs and files

You keep every right you have in the songs, recordings, MIDI files, MusicXML files and sheet music you create or bring into the app. They stay on your computer and we never receive them. You are responsible for having the right to use anything you import, for example by owning it, being allowed to copy it for your own practice, or because it is in the public domain. Please do not use the app to break anyone’s copyright. The sheet-music reader can make mistakes, so always check what it read.

Our content

The built-in songs are original pieces by David & Jane or public-domain melodies in our own arrangements. The app, its design, the logo, the colors and the texts belong to us or our licensors. You may use them through the app, but you may not copy them for other products or present them as your own.

Open-source software

Parts of the app are free software with their own licenses. The sheet-music reader (Pro) uses Audiveris under the GNU Affero General Public License 3.0, whose source code is available from github.com/Audiveris/audiveris; PDFs are shown with pdf.js (Apache-2.0). In the app, Settings → About → Licenses shows the details. These licenses apply to those parts, and nothing in these terms limits the rights they give you.

Children

The app is made for children as well as adults. It has no accounts, chat or online sharing. Children should use it with the supervision of a parent or guardian, who is responsible for the computer, the piano, the volume and how long the child plays.

Learning

Stars, scores, days in a row and badges are there to encourage practice. They are not a test of ability, and we cannot promise any particular result from using the app.

Your equipment

You connect a digital piano or keyboard to your computer at your own care, following its maker’s instructions. We are not responsible for equipment, other software or a computer that does not meet the system requirements.

No warranty, and limits of our responsibility

We work hard to make the app useful and reliable, but it is provided “as is” and “as available”, and we cannot promise that it will always work without errors or interruptions. To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost data, lost time or lost profits. Because your songs and progress are stored on your own computer, please keep backups (you can save a player to a file in the app). Nothing in these terms limits any right you have as a consumer by law, or any responsibility that the law does not allow us to limit.

Changes to the app and these terms

We may update the app and change these terms from time to time. We will post the new terms on this page with a new date. If you keep using the app after a change, that means you accept the new terms.

The website

The website gives general information. It may link to other websites (such as Amazon or the Microsoft Store) that we do not control and that have their own terms. Please use the contact form fairly and only to write to us.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the place where David & Jane is established, without taking away the mandatory consumer protections you have where you live.
