Privacy Policy
The short version: the app does not collect your personal information. It has no accounts, no ads and no analytics, and everything you create stays on your own computer. (The Windows apps and Free on the web have no accounts. Pro on the web needs your email address: see “My First Piano on the web” below.)
Who we are
“We” means David & Jane, the publisher of My First Piano (the “app”). You can reach us at support@davidandjane.com.
What the app does with your information
We do not collect, receive, sell, rent or share any personal information through the app. The app does not send anything about you, your child, your piano or your music to us or to anyone else.
- No accounts. You never sign up, log in or give a name or email address.
- No advertising. The app shows no ads and uses no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics or tracking. The app contains no analytics, crash-reporting or tracking tools.
- Works offline. The app does not need an internet connection to play, and it does not connect to our servers.
- No camera or microphone. The app does not ask for access to your camera or microphone.
What stays on your computer
To work properly, the app saves some things in its own private storage on your computer:
- your settings (for example volume, practice speed and which screen options you turned on);
- your progress and practice choices;
- songs you add or create (“My Songs”), and recordings you make in the app;
- whether you closed a message, such as the companion-book card;
- your chosen language;
- players: the names and pictures you choose for each player (they can be a nickname) and each player’s own progress, songs and settings;
- your results in the Find the Note game.
This information is not uploaded anywhere. You can remove it at any time by uninstalling the app from Windows Settings. You can remove a player, and in the Pro edition delete individual songs, inside the app.
Players and saved profiles
Players are a way to keep each person’s progress apart on a shared computer. A player’s name is only a label you type; it is stored on your computer and is never sent to us or to anyone else, and the app does not ask for any real information about a child. You can remove a player at any time inside the app.
You can also choose to save a player to a file (a “profile file”), for example to keep a copy, use another computer, or move from the Free to the Pro edition. The file is created where you choose to save it. We never receive it. Anyone who has the file can read what is in it (the player’s name, progress and songs), so keep it somewhere safe.
Your piano and MIDI
The app asks Windows for permission to use MIDI so it can listen to the keys you press on a connected digital piano or keyboard. This is used only to show and play the notes on your screen. The notes are not stored or sent anywhere unless you choose to record a song, and a recording is saved only on your computer.
Files and sheet music (Pro)
In the Pro edition you can open MIDI or MusicXML files, PDF files and pictures of sheet music. When you do, the app reads the file you chose and converts it into a song on your own computer. The conversion is done by software bundled inside the app. The files are not uploaded, and we never see them. You choose where any exported file is saved.
Links that open outside the app
The app has a few buttons that open a web page in your normal web browser, for example the page for the companion book on Amazon, our website, or the Microsoft Store. Those pages are run by other companies and have their own privacy policies. We do not control them. The app only opens such a page when you click the button.
Purchases and the Microsoft Store
The app is distributed through the Microsoft Store. If you download or buy the app, Microsoft handles your account, payment and download information under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. We do not receive your payment details. Microsoft may share basic aggregated information with us, such as the number of downloads, which does not identify you.
My First Piano on the web
You can also use My First Piano in a web browser at davidandjane.com/play/ (Free) and, after a purchase, My First Piano Pro for the web.
- Free on the web has no sign-in. Your settings, progress, players and songs are saved in your own browser, on your own device, and are not sent to us. The page files come from our website like any web page, and our web host may keep ordinary server logs (such as the time of a visit and the IP address) for security.
- Pro on the web needs an email address, because it is sold and unlocked on this website. We keep: your email address; the date, amount and order reference of your payment; whether your access is active; and, while you are signed in, a sign-in record. We never see or keep your card number or PayPal login: Stripe or PayPal handle payments on their own pages under their own privacy policies. We use your email only to send your sign-in link and messages about your purchase, and to help you if you write to us. We do not sell it or share it with anyone, except the payment provider and the email service that deliver your payment and your messages.
- Cookies. Signing in to Pro for the web sets one essential cookie (
mfp_session), a random code that keeps you signed in on that browser; on our server only a scrambled form of it is stored. A second cookie (mfp_l) remembers your language. There are no advertising or tracking cookies. Signing out removes the sign-in cookie. - Sheet-music reader (Pro on the web). When you read sheet music in Pro on the web, the pages you chose are sent over an encrypted connection to our reading service, which turns them into notes and deletes them as soon as it finishes. We do not keep or look at them. The notes come back to your browser and stay there.
- Your progress and songs stay in your browser, also in Pro. They are not uploaded to our server. If you clear your browser data they are removed, so use Save to a file in Players to keep a copy.
- Keeping and deleting. We keep purchase records for as long as we need them to support you and for accounting and tax rules. To ask us to delete or correct your email, write to support@davidandjane.com.
Children
My First Piano is made for children learning piano as well as for parents and adults. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, including children, there is nothing for a child to disclose, and the app has no chat, comments, social features or online sharing. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have received information about a child, please write to support@davidandjane.com and we will delete it.
This website
This website is a simple set of information pages. It does not use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. If you email us, or use the contact form, we receive your name, email address and message, and we use them only to reply to you. The contact form sends your message to our email by SMTP and keeps nothing on the website server; it uses one temporary cookie, deleted when you close the browser, only to stop spam. We keep support emails only as long as needed to help you, and we do not share them.
Security
Because your information stays on your computer, its safety depends on your computer’s own protections, such as your Windows account and device security. Keep Windows up to date and use a password on shared computers.
Your rights
Since we hold no personal information about you from the app, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete. If you have emailed us and want your message removed, write to us and we will delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law, and you can contact us about them at any time.
Changes to this policy
If the app or this website changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this page and the date above before the change takes effect.
