My First Piano on a Chromebook or in your browser

My First Piano also runs in Chrome and Edge, so it works on Chromebooks, Windows, Mac and Linux computers. Plug in a digital piano with a USB cable, or use the computer keyboard, and play along with the falling notes.

Free in your browser

No sign-in and no payment. The core learning songs, falling notes, colors and note names, Find the Note, players, My progress and school-style progress reports.

Pro for the web

The complete library, your own songs, recording, MIDI and MusicXML import and export, and the advanced practice tools. One payment, no subscription.

What you need

Connect your piano

  1. Plug the USB cable from the piano into the computer and turn the piano on.
  2. Open My First Piano and choose Connect my piano.
  3. When the browser asks to use MIDI devices, choose Allow.
  4. Press a key. If it lights up on the screen, you are connected.

Piano not found? Unplug the cable and plug it in again, close other tabs or programs that use the piano, and press Check again. On a school Chromebook, the school may block USB devices or MIDI: ask the person who manages the Chromebooks to allow MIDI for https://davidandjane.com.

Install it like an app

In Chrome or Edge, look for the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or open the browser menu and choose Install My First Piano (in Chrome, under Cast, save and share). It then opens in its own window, with its own icon, and works offline.

Where your progress is kept

Players, songs, settings and progress are saved in the browser on that device. Nothing is uploaded to us (see the Privacy Policy). On a Chromebook, each student’s own Chrome profile keeps its own data. If you clear the browser data, it is removed, so use Players → Save to a file to keep a copy, or to move to another computer, or to the Windows app.

Progress reports for teachers and parents

Open My progress and choose Save progress report (PDF). The browser’s print window opens: choose Save as PDF to keep the report or send it to a printer. The class summary and the spreadsheet file work too. See Progress reports for teachers and families.

For schools

What is different from the Windows app

The web versions have the same screens, songs, languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese) and practice tools as the Windows app. One feature of Pro is only in the Windows app for now: the sheet-music reader that turns a PDF or a photo of sheet music into a song. Everything else in Pro works in the web version, including importing MIDI and MusicXML files. The Windows app is on the Microsoft Store.
